Jericho and the Dead Sea

3-23-11 – It was a little rainy yesterday, but that didn’t stop our group from traveling through the wilderness of Judah where we were able to overlook the St. George Monastery on our way to the oldest city in the world, Jericho.  The sight of the monastery “hanging” on the side of the cliff was breTathtaking! The monastery was founded in 516 A.D. and we had to marvel at how these people could build such a place.

We then traveled to Jericho where we were able to see the ruins and then on to Qumeran where we had lunch and looked at the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found by the Bedouin.  The weather had gotten better by the afternoon and we traveled on to the Dead Sea where a few of us decided to “float” and to have a beauty treatment (we covered ourselves in the mud of the sea).

We’ve been learning a lot of the history of the land and the people. We have very little “down time” and are enjoying every minute of our busy days! I hope you enjoy these photos.   Carol G.
